Friday, Sept 17, 2010 - Ferrari Factory Tour
The Factory is holding open tour availability on September 17th for a group of our members who might wish to participate. They can accommodate up to 40 people (in two groups of 20), starting at 2:30 pm that Friday afternoon. In addition, should a group of our members wish to take such a tour, but on a different date, the Factory will try to accommodate us, albeit on a space available basis. Please remember that they give many tours to owners from many countries, with only a limited number being conducted in English. So, if you are seeking individual tours, please continue to work through your dealers. But, if you would like to seek such a tour as part of a larger group of our members, please let us know and we will relay your request to the Factory. As we are just getting started with such arrangements, we will likely need to work some kinks out in our processes, but bear with us as we all work together to get things operating smoothly. To begin with, please send any requests for such a group tour to Theresa Gilpatrick tgipat@hostworks.com, who will coordinate the material and work with me to send it on to Ferrari. Please do remember that this is for larger groups; for small groups or singles, please work through your dealer as you have in the past. For more information about travel arrangements contact Bob Lebenson at 702-340-5957.

Sept 18-19, 2010 - FCA Virginia City Hillclimb
The annual Virginia City Hillclimb runs from Carson City to Virginia City, Nevada, and is put on by the Ferrari Club of America Pacific Region. The hillclimb has been run since May 23-24, 1964 when "Road & Track" joined with the Aston Martin Owners Club for the first event, which took a totally different route. Later the event was sponsored by the SCCA. Drivers try for the fastest time from the Highway 341 and 342 intersection up to Virginia City via the Highway 341 truck route. It is a paved road, and the local police block it off in order to utilize both lanes up the hill. Most of the turns are marked at 25-35 mph, and cars are going through these turns with very few guard rails at 75-110 mph. Before the truck route was constructed cars would run up Highway 342 past the Gold Hill Hotel and other landmarks. Highway 342 is now the return route for cars that have completed their runs up Highway 341. The hillclimb covers 5.2 miles climbing 1,260 feet. This event is not to be confused with the June 25-26, 2010 Hill Climb sponsored by Spectre Performance. The June event is by invitation only to "Pro-Touring Street Machines, European Exotics and Highly-Tuned Imports". The September 18-19, 2010 Hill Climb is sponsored by the Ferrari Club of America Pacific Region. The Ferrari Club event is limited to Ferraris unless they cannot fill 70 spots; then they open it to other cars. Drivers get anywhere from 10-20 runs up the hill over the course of a weekend. Usually you get about 10 practice runs on Saturday and 6 or 7 timed runs on Sunday. The event is very dangerous. There are over 20 corners to memorize, and the penalty for going off course is extremely high. In June of 2002 two persons died at the Virginia City Hillclimb. That June event was sponsored by the Audi Club, and was not an FCA event. A preliminary investigation showed the driver went into a curve too fast and lost control of his Dodge Viper. The vehicle slid off the roadway and fell about 250 feet down a ravine. It is reported that an overzealous Viper driver on his first run of the day during his first time at the hillclimb put his car over the side and killed himself and his female passenger. Top contenders have been Amir Rosenbaum's highly modified Ferrari F40, and Bill Pound's Ferrari 308 with a huge supercharger and intake on the rear hood. Read the article in "The Prancing Horse" Issue 174 First Quarter 2010 page 40 and see the FCA 2007 Hillclimb Video, FCA 2008 Hillclimb Video and FCA 2009 Hillclimb Pictures. For more information and to enter see www.ferraripacific.org or contact Dennis Chiodo at (925) 250-9276.
